When to visit

The most favorable period to visit Hainan is the dry season from November to April. Daytime temperatures average a comfortable 22°C to 27°C, and monthly rainfall remains under 50 mm. These stable, low-humidity conditions are ideal for coastal activities, allowing visitors to swim at Yalong Bay in Sanya or surf the winter swells at Riyue Bay.

This pleasant weather also creates perfect conditions for inland exploration. Travelers can easily navigate terrestrial attractions without the extreme summer heat, such as hiking through the Yanoda Rainforest or exploring the craters at the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark.

It is important to note that January and February mark the absolute peak tourist season due to the Chinese New Year holidays. During these weeks, domestic travel peaks massively, causing hotel rates in southern resorts to surge by over 50%. Therefore, securing domestic flights and accommodations several months in advance is strictly required.

Important things to know

1. Payments

- The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). The economy is overwhelmingly cashless. Downloading Alipay or WeChat Pay and binding a foreign credit card prior to arrival is an absolute, non-negotiable operational necessity for all transactions.

2. Tap Water

- Municipal tap water is not safe to drink directly from the tap. Vigorous boiling (kettles are provided in all rooms) or total reliance on commercially sealed bottled water is strictly required for drinking.

3. Electricity

- The standard electrical voltage is 220V with a frequency of 50Hz. Plug types A, C, and I are standard. Most modern hotels feature universal international outlets.

4. Tipping

- Tipping is not culturally practiced or expected anywhere in China. Leaving gratuities at restaurants or for taxi drivers is unnecessary, though private, bilingual tour guides may accept small cash tips.

5. SIM Cards

- Purchasing an international roaming eSIM before arrival is highly recommended. This legally bypasses China's "Great Firewall," allowing uninterrupted access to Western applications like Google Maps, WhatsApp, and social media.

6. Driving Side

- Vehicles operate on the right side of the road.

Souveniers

1. Coconut Shell Carvings

- With millions of coconut palms on the island, local artisans have spent centuries perfecting the art of carving discarded, dried coconut shells into highly detailed, polished bowls, tea sets, and decorative statues.

2. Hainan Huanghuali Wood

- One of the rarest and most expensive woods in the world, endemic to Hainan. Coveted for its sweet fragrance and spectacular, ghost-like grain patterns, authentic carved beads or furniture made from this rosewood are incredibly valuable.

3. South China Sea Pearls

- Hainan is a major center for pearl cultivation. High-quality seawater pearls, known for their perfect spheres and bright luster, are widely sold in specialized boutiques across Sanya and Haikou.
