When to visit

Travel to this country is currently not recommended or possible due to the ongoing war.

The best periods to visit Afghanistan are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October). Daytime temperatures in central areas like Kabul average between 15°C and 23°C, offering a comfortable climate for urban exploration. These moderate conditions are highly suitable for visiting remote archaeological sites, such as the Minaret of Jam in Ghor Province, before the extreme weather sets in.

The spring months act as the peak tourist season, primarily driven by the Nowruz (Persian New Year) celebrations. Many visitors travel to attend the large gatherings at the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif. Because of this heightened local and international activity, hotel and transport costs usually rise by 15% to 20%, making advance reservations necessary.

Throughout the summer season from June to August, low-lying cities like Kandahar experience extreme heat, with highs frequently exceeding 40°C. However, this dry timeframe is the only viable window for high-altitude trekking in the Wakhan Corridor. During these months, mountain passes located above 4,000 meters are finally clear of snow, allowing for safe passage.

The winter season from December to March introduces harsh conditions, with nighttime temperatures plummeting to -10°C to -20°C in the central highlands. Significant snowfall regularly triggers avalanches that block critical infrastructure, including the essential Salang Pass. Consequently, ground transit through mountainous regions becomes extremely hazardous and is often completely impassable for extended periods.
