When to visit

The best time to visit Senegal is during the dry season, from November to May. During these months, the weather is consistently sunny with pleasant, breezy temperatures, making it ideal for exploring bustling markets, viewing wildlife, and relaxing on the beautiful Atlantic beaches.

The peak tourist season is from December to February, when temperatures are at their most comfortable, drawing crowds of European tourists seeking winter sun. Expect higher accommodation rates in popular coastal spots like Saly and Cap Skirring.

The shoulder months of October and May offer a transition period with warmer temperatures and fewer tourists. October can still be humid from the passing rains, while May begins to heat up significantly.

The rainy season, spanning roughly from July to September, brings intense humidity and heavy tropical downpours. While some coastal dirt roads become difficult to navigate and the heat can be oppressive, the landscape turns vibrantly green, and this is a spectacular time for birdwatching in the northern sanctuaries.

How to get around

1. Taxis and Ride-Hailing (Yango/Heetch)

- Yellow-and-black taxis are everywhere in Dakar, but you must aggressively haggle the price before getting in. Ride-hailing apps like Yango are increasingly popular, offering fixed, fair prices for tourists.

2. Sept-Places (Seven-Seaters)

- The backbone of intercity travel. These are battered, old Peugeot station wagons that fit seven passengers. They only leave the station when completely full, making them cheap, cramped, and highly authentic.

3. Car Rapides

- The iconic, brightly painted, wildly decorated minibuses of Dakar. They are incredibly cheap but run on informal routes, making them difficult for tourists to navigate, though they offer a quintessential local experience.

4. Dakar-Gorée & Casamance Ferries

- Regular passenger ferries connect downtown Dakar to Gorée Island. For long distances, the overnight Aline Sitoé Diatta ferry is the safest and most relaxing way to travel from Dakar south to Ziguinchor.

5. Private Car Hire with Driver

- For exploring regions outside Dakar (like the Lompoul Desert or Saloum Delta), hiring a private 4x4 with a French-speaking driver is the most comfortable and reliable option.

For safety and comfort, ride-hailing apps are best in Dakar, while hiring a private driver or taking the overnight ferry is preferred for long-distance travel.

- A universally beloved comfort food consisting of chicken marinated in mustard, lemon juice, and an absolute mountain of caramelized onions, slowly stewed and served over white rice.

3. Mafé

- A rich, heavy, and savory stew made from ground peanuts (peanut butter), tomatoes, and root vegetables, simmered with beef or lamb and served with rice.

4. Pastels

2. Visa-Free Countries

- Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, ECOWAS nations, and several other countries can enter Senegal without a visa.

3. Visa on Arrival / Embassies

- Travelers from countries not on the visa-exempt list must generally apply for a visa at a Senegalese embassy or consulate prior to arrival, as e-Visas are not currently standard.

4. Duration of Stay

- Visa-free visitors are granted entry for up to 90 days upon arrival. A valid passport with at least six months of validity is required.

5. Health Requirements

- A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is officially required, especially if arriving from an endemic zone, though it may not always be checked for direct flights from Europe/US. Malaria medication is highly recommended.

Important things to know

1. Payments

- The local currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). Cash is heavily relied upon. Credit cards are accepted in high-end hotels, upscale restaurants, and modern supermarkets in Dakar, but useless in markets or rural areas.

4. Tipping in Restaurants

- Tipping is customary but not obligatory. Leaving around 10% of the bill in upscale restaurants or rounding up taxi fares is standard practice.

5. SIM Cards

- Local SIM cards are cheap and easy to set up. Providers like Orange, Free, and Expresso have kiosks at the airport; you just need your passport to register and buy a 4G data package.

6. Driving Side

- In Senegal, people drive on the right side of the road.

Souveniers

1. Sous-Verre (Reverse Glass Painting)

- A unique local art form where vibrant, everyday Senegalese scenes are painted on the reverse side of a pane of glass.

2. Sweetgrass Baskets

- Beautifully woven, colorful baskets hand-made by women in the rural villages using natural grasses and strips of recycled plastic.

3. Djembe Drums

- High-quality, hand-carved wooden drums topped with goat skin, deeply tied to West Africa's rich musical heritage.
